Meadowood Rental Cabin, Rangeley Maine

By: Sean, Cleveland OH
We stayed here with the intention of skiing a few days at Saddleback Mountain Ski Resort. The cabin was a perfect fit for the 6 of us, with a wood-burning stove, plenty of bedding, couches and tables. The driveway was plowed for us after we got dumped on and it was a great stay. In addition, we were right down the road from the snowmobile trails that go all around Rangeley and as far north as Canda! We hope to return again this winter. Highly recommended!

I have stayed at Meadowood many times over the years. The cabin is spacious and always immaculately clean. There is a heater which can keep it quite warm, but in the fall and winter I prefer to have a fire in the woodstove, which has a glass door so that you can enjoy the flames. Shaun keeps well-seasoned wood stacked up and accessible so that it is easy to stay snug and toasty. The cabin has everything you need for a delightful escape from your daily grind.
The Rangeley Lakes region is famous for its pristine beauty, with a deep and long crystalline lake, rushing streams, a rustic State Park, and encircling mountains. Although Rangeley is a favorite vacation and escape location, it is not overrun with tourists at any time of the year. The population of the region increases at certain times of the winter and the summer due to the attractions of the Maine countryside, but you will never feel as though Rangeley is uncomfortably crowded.
If you are a skiier Saddleback Mountain is quite close and Sugarloaf is nearby as well. If you like to work out there is a great Fitness Center on your way into town. There are moose throughout the area and if you want to see one the locals can tell you where to look. There are great restaurants and a well stocked grocery store. The library has internet services and a good assortment of books and videos.
The mountains give one plenty of opportunity to hike, snowshoe, and cross country ski (these are the things which I enjoy the most). I am always able to find the solitude which I yearn for when I go to Meadowood. After a few days of breathing the mountain air, hiking in the hills, drinking in the scenery, seeing the amazing Rangeley night sky, watching the flames, listening to the fire crackle, and having time to be alone with God and the beauty of nature, I am refreshed and ready to go back to my daily life. If you go make sure you go and see "The Height of Land". There are few vistas like it - gorgeous!

This is the best place in New England to land large healthy Salmon. The cabin is spotless clean with a full kitchen that makes vacation meals easy and affordable. The cabin is remote enough to allow privacy and still have easy access to the Lake. The outdoor deck is large and comfy and equipped for outdoor grilling.

Reserve your week early, because the schedule fills quickly. Talk to Shawn or Pops before fishing for a status of the lake and fishing tips.

We stayed during winter with our three kids while skiing at Saddleback. The cabin has plenty of space; we could easily have had more people. It was very close to Saddleback, easy to find and very well maintained.

Stayed for a weekend and wished it was longer! A cozy, comfy cabin with great view of surrounding nature. Stayed for atving and had a great time. The cabin was perfect and well equipped for our stay. Beth and Shaun were very friendly and helpful and made our stay a delight. Can't wait to stay again!

We have stayed at Meadowood Cabin twice. Once in the winter for snowmobiling and once during the fall just to have a nice relaxing get away. We were allowed to bring our two shih tzus and they loved to play in the back field. We even saw a moose walking through the field. It was so exciting. We stood on the deck and took so many photos and were just in awe to see one so close. Tracy enjoyed the snowmobiling trails which were accessible directly from the cabin. I was still using crutches but used the time to just sit, listen to music and read. We found a great restaurant in town, hometown atmosphere and great food. Drove up the mountain and watched all the skiers and snowboarders.

Our fall trip was just as exciting. The trees were beautiful. Again I was not walking well so we did a lot of driving around taking photos. We went into Phillips and visited the old train depot.

Beth and Shawn were excellent hosts and the cabin was very well stocked for anything we needed for cooking to cleaning and warmth.
Shawn was an excellent guide. Tracy went out once fishing and they did not catch anything so he took us out again and invited me long for ride (crutches and ll). It was near sunset so the ride home was beautiful. They even caught some salmon so our day was complete.

I would recommend Meadowood Cabin and the Rangeley area to anyone, an outdoors person or not you would enjoy.

We stayed at Meadowood Cabin with another family and enjoyed our stay. The cabin was clean and comfortable for everyone. The second floor loft was perfect for the 5 children. The bathroom was clean and there was enough hot water for all of our showers. The kitchen offered ample necessities to cook our meals. The cabin very close to downtown Rangeley and Saddleback Mountain. We would recommend this place to anyone with kids and dogs.

My wife and I have been staying at meadowood for a number of years. And look forward to our stay each year.If you are looking for a place where you can truly unwind and enjoy the mountains and lakes this is the place. The cabin has everthing you need and is private and very comfortable. The Swains Beth and Shaun are great people and do everything possible to make your stay a memorable one. You can hike and explore right out your door and if you like to fish Shaun is a Master Maine Guide and has spent his entire life fishing Rangley lake. His half or full day trips trolling the famous Rangley lake for native brook trout and salmon are a unforgetable experience. The near by town has alot to offer in the way of small shops and places to eat to to mix things up a bit.If your not not looking for an alantic City board walk vacation and truly want to get away and relax meadowood is the place.

I have been staying at Meadowwood for the last three years. I learned about the cabin after having a great time fishing with Shaun on Rangeley. My friends and I have stayed here during the spring and the fall. First off, I don't really consider Meadowood a cabin. Its a home! Our second home! The house and premises are always well maintained and clean. I like to stay in a facility that offers everyone plenty of space to rest and sleep. The kitchen is full size. There is plenty of space to watch TV or a video in the evening, or grill some fish on the deck, or make a fire in the woodstove on a cold night. The abundance of wildlife is amazing. Deer, foxes, the occassionally moose, never ceases to surprise me. Meadowood is located off the main road so one doesn't have to listen to all the traffic from cars and trucks travelling on Rte. 4. Yet its less than 3 miles to the town to pick up supplies. I come to Rangeley for its fishing and everytime here it has been nothing less than spectacular! I don't know of any lake in New England, and I have fished many during my life, from the adirondacks, to Lake Champlain, Sebago to Moosehead, where one can consistently hook up with 4 to 6 lb. landlocked salmon, everytime! The huge brook trout are an added bonus. I tow my boat and trailer when I come up. But, I can always count on Shaun and his father on giving me the most current and accurate fishing information, where the fish are, depth, best lures, etc. An added bonus is being able to launch my boat at Shaun's fathers Marina and having a secure dock slip. I really appreciate the security and peace of mind knowing that my boat and equipment are safe and watched over.

We passed a cozy, wonderful week in Meadowood. The modest, comfortable house made an ideal backdrop for our family gathering. The house was spotless when we arrived and had everything we needed--plenty of firewood (with an effective furnace to reach all corners of the house), a well-supplied kitchen, and a stunning early morning view out the picture window. It was just perfect for our three generations: parents and grandparents in the two bedrooms, and the children in the loft. The steep steps and low ceiling in the loft would probably be less comfortable for adults, but for the children, it made for a special play and sleep space that was uniquely theirs. The shower is the tiniest I've ever showered in, but that was probably the only drawback. Our two grown labs enjoyed plunging through the snow in the back yard and then napping by the stove. Skiers in the family returned tired and happy from Saddleback in the evening, and the family gathered for our home-cooked meals around the table in the evening--wonderful memories that we look forward to building on when we return this year.

I have stayed in Meadowood Cabin many times over many years at different times of the year, one of my favorite things about this Cabin is the serenity, whenever I first arrive at the Cabin I instantly go into Vacation Mode... you hear the beautiful sounds of nature and the views are so relaxing, the Meadow view out the back of the deck and the view of my favorite fishing lake Rangeley always makes me take a deep breath followed by a sigh wishing my time at Meadowood would not end.
The closeness (3 miles) to the downtown amenities makes shopping and eateries close but not so close that it interfears with the peacefulness that the Cabin offers.
I have also enjoyed the professional and experienced Rangeley Lake Guide Service, since the owner grew up on Rangeley his knowledge of fishing and the surrounding land is priceless, so many great memories fishing with Shaun.
If you are looking for a peaceful and memorable retreat look no further because this is where my search ends as I am sure you will agree after your stay at Meadowood. I love this place!!!

We had a wonderful weekend getaway and enjoyed the cabin and its amenities very much. One of my favorite things we did was tune in to the local radio station after dinner and they played 50's music and we danced in the kitchen!

The Shaw's up for the week with the Atkins, Augers & Alberts. Not much snow but managed to get the Saddleback Mountain for three days- one of them being very cold. We got some rain on New Years Eve and had a great fire while enjoying the cabin and friends. The cabin was great. We can't wait to spend more time up here as we build our camp.

Unseasonably warm for December, but we're enjoying it. We love the view of the lake and mountain from the front window. Yesterday we climbed the mountains around Rangeley. We didn't see any deer or moose but saw plenty of sign and game trails. There is a beautiful rushing brook just a ways into the woods. we found some dry stones to cross without getting our feet wet. Almost immediately we began our climb to the top. It's an easy hike and well worth it. We enjoyed black-capped chickadees fluttering around us. God's creation is just so amazing when you stop to look and ponder it for a moment. He's such an awesome God!

Our second trip here- wonderful time! The weather was rainy but we still did and saw a lot. Tracy went fishing with Shaun and I was able to get out for a boat ride in the late afternoon. Tracy caught a 4 pound salmon- very excited and beautiful sunset. Tracy saw a couple of deer first thing in the morning. Looking forward to our next stay!

Our weekend in Rangeley was all we hoped for. We brought our three grandchildren and some of their friends to introduce them to the wonder of this area including the fishing. The whole crew had a wonderful time and the fishing was great. Everyone is ready to come back again. Meadowood Cabin served our group of seven adults very well. Saw some deer feeding in the meadow and enjoyed the comfort of the wood stove in the cool evenings as we played cards, board games and watched TV. A great time was had by all. Thanks for your wonderful hospitality!

In spite of some cloudy, damp weather this week, we had a great get-away at Meadowood cabin. We enjoyed hiking up Bald Mountain, Piazza Rock, Saddleback Mtn to Rock Pond, and Angel Falls. We especially enjoyed taking the pontoon boat tour around Rangeley lake and learning of your family history in this area. We saw five moose and many deer, a bald eagle- and our dog loved being here. Thank you.

We're all settled in - finally! Got the music going, dogs have enjoyed running around outside in the snow. Looking forward to snowmobiling tomorrow. Going out for a nice dinner at Loon Lodge tonight and just relaxing from our long ride to get here. Tracy just got back from checking the trails out, they are great! Will go again tomorrow. Excellent. This made our vacation.
Rode up to mountain and got lots of good photos of skiers. Going to relax, ate pizza and went and bought some VHS movies and will leave for all to enjoy.
Went back up to the mountain and watched the barn board box races. Very windy and cold today. Got Thai food for takeout dinner. It's so very quiet here. Emma has hardly barked.
Just saw a moose walking through the back field, watched it for 10-15 minutes! Excellent. This made our vacation.

Great vacation spot- Saddleback was great and it was nice to have a warm, comfortable cabin to come to in the evening. Our dog just loved it here, here was better behaved here than at home. He didn't bark. Very quiet here, we loved the wood stove! It was awesome coming back after a long day of skiing. I loved my bed in the loft, it was really comfortable and I slept great. Loved laying in the loft reading and the couch was really nice. Super comfy. Spent a lot of time watching TV, playing Fact or Crap and reading while enjoying the fire with my dog, Toby. The wood stove is great to dry our cloths when we come home from skiing. I had a great time at Saddleback exploring Nightmare and Thrombosis and other trails. Toby loved it here, my sister loved to play in the loft pretending she was a pioneer. I really hope I can come back!

2/4 Just got here, staying for my 12th birthday- I was freezing. It was 10:00 pm and came in to a super-warm cabin- so relieved after a two hour drive. 2/5
We are up early and off to ski.
The sun is shining, snow still on the trees, can't wait to hit the mtn with the kids. We've never had a full day of skiing from 9-4 since this is our first weekend ski trip. 2/6 Up early for our second day of skiing, got 6-8 inches of new snow last night. Sad to leave Meadowood Cabin, but we'll be back in a month! Thank you!

What a wonderful time spent at Meadowood. The cabin felt so much like home and the hospitality by the Swains was perfect. The month started warm with most of Decembers snow gone, but it spooned returned with about 20" of new snow. The views and wildlife are just what we were looking for. On Thursday evening (late) I went out to my truck to get some gear and was startled by a cow moose licking salt from he trailer. What a sight! We are so looking forward to visiting again!

The great blizzard of 2010: All six of us arrived just after Santa departed, just hours before the storm began. On the mountain there was 38" of new snow with - we guessed- about half of that at Meadwood Cabin, but we dug the 4WD cars out and headed to the slopes. Mr. Swain kindly plowed us out of here It was great to return "home" to our cozy nest, to drink hot buttered rum and cocoa by the woodstove and Monitor heater. Many thinks, we hope to return!

What a wonderful time my dad and I have had here during the month of November. The wildlife, including deer and moose, as well as the spectacular views of the hillside have been an amazing display. What an amazing month to remind ourselves how blessed we are by God and His creation. It was great to have our uncle with us for a couple of days. I especially enjoyed swapping stories around the woodstove of our daily adventures. And coming back to the warm and comfortable cabin after a long day in the woods was always a treat. We appreciate the hospitality and enjoyed learning about your family's rich heritage in the area. And now we have out own memories to share from Meadowood. I think we summed it best just before leaving today "each time we returned to the cabin, it felt like coming home"

Everything is melting, muddy and sparking of spring. The ice is still quite thick on the lake, but the thermometer got up to 88 degrees today This was rest, refreshment, quiet healing and a much needed respite. As usual I am . As usual I am in both of your debt for this haven of rest and privacy. The solitude is exactly what I needed.

We loved Meadowood Cabin, it was charming. Well built home base to come back to at the end of the day. The photos Beth took are especially nice. We rode the train in Phillips, had lunch beside Smalls Falls, took a dirt road from Weld to Byron Village and discovered the fabulous Coos Canyon which really is like a mini Grand Canyon. We didn't find any gold except on the leaves. We had our breath taken away at Height of Land and also by the views of Rangeley lake both high and lows experienced on Rt. 17. We had delicious lobster at Scotty's Lobster Pound in Oqqosic. We didn't see any moose except for the huge one mounted on the wall at the IGA. We saw a loon on Beaver Lake. We saw wild turkeys twice, and deer checked us out from the woods straight off the cabin deck. The stars at night were tremendous!

Had a marvelous time with friends in your wonderful cabin close to the lake. As always time flew by as we enjoyed the spectacular scenery of Rangeley Maine. we hiked, jet-skied, saw a beautiful view from an airplane and of course ate like kings during our last hurrah of the summer. Of course our friends, the moose said goodbye to us the last day we were there. Thanks again from all of us.

We loved the beautiful scenery! We saw 5 deer, loons on the lake and then two moose on highway 16 towards Stratton. The kids enjoyed swimming at Smalls Falls. We hiked up to the top of Bald Mtn. The hike is worth the tremendous view. We had fun in town fishing off the dock and playing on the playground and swimming. We caught some nice fish. Fly fished the upper dam, enjoyed the shops in Rangeley and also talking with Dee (Dees Gift Shop) and all enjoyed the fishing spots recommended by the fellow at the fly shop. Overall a great time!

Had a wonderful time this week. Weather was really nice, warm and sunny most of the time. Kids loved playing wiffle ball in the meadow, and looking for wildlife. Renting a boat and seeing rangeley lake for the day was their favorite thing. Saw fox, woodchucks, deer, loons and many different birds, Cabin was very comfy and cozy. We played many games together at night and made a lot of new family memories to keep forever. Thanks again for everything. We really love rangeley and hope to see you again next year.

Tuesday it started raining but we walked up the road to the river and saw a moose twice! Lots of poker, fires and board games. The red Sox lost to Texas three times. Deer in the yard. Badminton, frisbee and airplanes in the meadow. Sunsets &shooting stars. Thanks!

We all had a fantastic time even though it rained. It was still worth the drive. If there was one thing we got out of this rainy vacation it was many good stories. Especially our story of getting a boat for a few hours so we could see the lake with sunlight Although our story ended with an hour or so of rain, thunder and lightening, we did get to see a double rainbow! We're pretty sure we were the only people to see it since we were on the lake all by ourselves! Well, despite the rain we had a wonderful vacation! Thank you.

Just want to tell you guys how we enjoyed our week in your cabin. My wife, Cheryl, described it as perfect and I could not agree more. Shaun stopped by and made sure we had everything and stacked more wood for us. Shaun and his dad made sure that we were plowed out after the snowstorm, which we enjoyed. We rented snowmobiles from Shaun's dad and Summer took care of us. She was really sweet and made sure we had everything for 2 great days. I feel I know your whole family and they are all great. We always have loved Rangeley in the summer but Rangeley in the winter is a incredible experience. We hope to make this an annual event. Once again thanks for everything.

We had a wonderful time here. This was our first time and we will certainly be back. It was a pleasure meeting Shaun and spending time on the boat. John enjoyed catching 10 fish at 5:00 a.m.! We built fires, played soccer, went hiking and boating. The cabin is perfect for us. Thanks for all of your great recommendations.

Where to begin....? What a lovely place you have here! Relaxing on your deck with morning coffee, your meadow, the breeze, a bit of sunshine- perfect! George fished with Shaun this morning producing 2 keepers: a 3.5 pound salmon and a 3 pound brook trout. I joined them for the evening charter and caught and released 2 salmon and a brook trout. Shaun sure knows Rangeley Lake and surrounding area- amazing expert fisherman and guide. Meadowood Cabin has everything we need for a cozy, comfortable stay. We'll be back!

A wonderful, cozy cabin with gorgeous views. Everyone was relaxed within moments of arrival. The only missing thing was moose walking down the trail. Shaun, it was nice to meet you. It was a great Thanksgiving weekend!
P.S. Goldie enjoyed the dog run!

We got in around 2 p.m. and as usual, everything was in perfect condition. I'm sitting here at 4 p.m. writing in the log watching for the monster deer John L. and Shaun's brother did not get- he must have had a date and didn't show up tonight..... Shaun, thank you for the permits and the new additions to the camp.

Another great and relaxing weekend in Rangeley. Saw our first snow of the season! Thanks for the cookies, they were great in the microwave for a few seconds! No signs of wildlife- outdoors, anyway! See you in the spring!

We had a great week here and fit in lots- canoeing, kayaking, fishing, hiking and of course, moose watching! We were very lucky and spotted 8 moose on our sightseeing trips. The best was just down the road from the cabin where we saw a mother and a young moose along with a bull moose with great antlers. The leaves were beautiful and continued to get better each day. This is a great spot to visit. Thanks for the cookies and for all your help getting our vacation set up!

Here we are again in Rangeley. As we got out of the car the sweet scent of fir & pine permeated the air. ....after dark we sat on the deck and looked up at a sky full of twinkling stars. What a gorgeous sight!
Up at 4:45 a.m. (ugh) to meet Shaun to go fishing. I think this is our fourth time with Shaun. Beautiful day- caught two nice salmon. Day warmed into the '70's, lovely autumn day on the lake and in town. So sad to leave but must get back to reality and work. Thanks again for a great day of fishing and a very cozy and comfortable cabin.

Shaun- thanks to you an Beth for a wonderful four days of fishing, exploring and learning about the Rangeley area. We really enjoyed your wonderful cabin and most of all spending time with you fishing on the lake. We met a lot of nice people, saw a lot of beautiful country and caught a bunch of fish. Thanks so much for the hospitality!

My boys and I just returned from a weeks stay at Meadowood and couldn't agree more with the other comments we've read! Very clean cabin with nice decor (great sofa), well stocked kitchen (we brought many items but were pleased to see that we needn't have), and everything else you might need for a stay either in the summer or winter. We did see deer in the backyard, and Moose on the road, which was really exciting. Access to the lake is minutes away and there is nothing nicer than having your morning coffee on that great deck. You can tell that the cabin is well looked after.....high marks!

We were delighted with Meadowood Cabin. The property around is extremely well cared for and can only be described as park-like. A wonderful deck has a pretty view out to Rangeley Lake and there is even a trail through the woods so that you can further enjoy the wildlife and the peacefulness. Inside, the cabin is spotless and comfortable and is just a short walk to the dock and an excellent boat ramp.

What a wonderful cabin. We rented for three months of the winter snowmobile season and were very please with the place. Everything worked well, the place was a joy and the guests we brought up on a few weekends we also very pleased. I would recommend to all. Very quiet and peaceful, and snowmobile right from your driveway. Thanks for letting us enjoy your cabin. Randy and Lynn DuBois

The cabin itself is big and has room for a lot of people if you wish, but it is cozy as well, in that the extra sleeping space is above in a loft (sleeps six I think). It has two nice bedrooms downstairs, a wood stove, a very efficient heater, and a nice bathroom. Everything you need is there. You can walk up the hill/mountain that it is at the foot of and sometimes see moose. Occasionally they may in fact wander through the far side of the lawn. Rangeley Lake and the mountains around it are right there where you can see them. In the Winter it is incredible, with great skiing and snowmobiling resources right nearby. In the Spring and Summer it is a sportsman's dream, and a great place to bring your family. I am a young grandfather, and last Summer we brought our granddaughter, daughter and son-in-law, son and daughter-in-law, and college age daughter there, and everyone had a great time. There is a State Park right down the road, and on the other side of the lake is a beautiful public access beach. If you go don't miss the scenic overlook at the "Height of Land". It is pristine, and you can see far off into the White Mountains of New Hampshire as you look down on Mooselookmeguntik Lake, and Upper and Lower Richardson Lakes as well. The Appalachian Trail comes through that area. I like to have solitude, and am working on my Ph.D. - the cabin has often been a great place for me to work and get a lot accomplished. There is a great fitness center nearby (I am an avid lifter), a number of excellent eating places (for breakfast the BMC Diner is great!), and a public library with Internet access. Shaun has taken us out fishing on the lake and we have caught landlocked salmon that were huge and delicious. Our children love the cabin as much as we do, and I can't think of a place that we have been as a family that we could recommend more highly. This is a remote and beautiful part of Maine, and there is nothing quite like sunrise at the East end of Rangeley Lake, as the sun comes over the mountains. Enjoy! Bill Johnson

I have stayed at Meadowood with 3 friends every year at least once and sometimes twice. It's a wonderfully private place and has all the amenities - very clean and I've never seen a spider, or any other bug inside! It's fantastic and very relaxing. It has a small grill and a place for a campfire. All the amenities and it's private and big enough for 4 people to sleep downstairs and the loft has 6 single beds. It's so wonderful we go back each Spring and Fall. Nice deck and a walk in the woods is right at your doorstep. Try it - you'll LOVE it!!

Our family enjoyed our first ever trip to Rangeley. Many thanks to the Swains for their gracious hospitality. Our five children loved swimming at the lake, tubing behind a motor boat and jet skiing. They also has a great time at Lakeside Park in town and trying the various ice cream shops. The week went by very quickly! Hopefully we can come back another summer.
p.s.- I forgot to mention the fun we had fishing!

"We had a nice family gathering. Some came form CA and others from Cape Cod . The weather was perfect. Boating was great on the lake. The kids and adults had fun tubing. Trail riding on the ATV was adventurous and great views from the trails. Smalls Falls was cool and refreshing. Great place for picnic and hiking. The blueberries and raspberries were ripe and plentiful. Thanks, Shaun for staying out until we had dinner caught- the salmon was delicious. We saw a moose just past the State Park, our first one ever. It was nice to get away from the Southwest Florida heat.

I loved my morning coffee on the deck. Star-gazing at night was awesome. We loved watching the doe with her two fawns eat in the fields.
